Dominance Dog Training – Part II
Just had to write a part II to my Dominance Dog Training post from Feb, puppy class finished as horrifying as it was for me. For example, after six weeks of training the same dogs and people, of course the dogs where going at it pretty wild at some point and most of the owners said “now that’s aggression and fighting right”? Of course, the trainer said no because there was no blood but – most of the people in the room thought and said it was, including me. After six weeks of this the owners don’t know how to handle it and if frightens them and me, to think, these same people now go out and take their dog to a dog park and let their dog behave this way with someone else’s dog thinking its OK and I must state for the record it is not. Dogs know how to behave as dogs what we want from them is to live in harmony with us, dogs where breed with specific traits and had jobs that they no longer have so its up to us to give them the mental stimulation to make a happy healthy dog. Walking, running, agility and hiking to name a few are great ways to do this, a tired dog is a happy dog. Well now I am in a second class for adult dogs and after one night of orientation with out dogs I am already concerned with what I am hearing. After tonight’s class a women walked out with me who does not know I am a trainer, she turns and says to me “I don’t like what I am hearing in that class its just wrong and harsh, I will try a class or two and if it don’t get better I am leaving” will good for her but I just don’t get why anyone would want to train this way, it is very old school. With all we know today after many studies and scientific proof on how dogs learn and retain why not try an alternative style of training and offer that to the public; let them make the choice on how they want their dog to be treated. Again Love & Kindness people it really works I have five dogs who had some serious issues and due to training, management, environment they are all well adjusted dogs.
The next step here for me is to speak with someone in charge to at least offer a pilot alternate positive & reward based training class and let the public decide for them self what method they prefer!!
